Transfer Students' Home Away From Home

Commuter and Transfer Commons

Commuter and Transfer Associates of 2017-2018

Vision

Vision is to have a clear goal of creating changes, understand why we do what we do. Our CTC has a new vision this year, that is to turn this lounge-like place into a multi-functional environment to empower thousands of transfers and commuters. It is not just a place with microwave and hot water, it is a family, a home away from home. I can envision that with our team effort, we can add values to this place via building up deeper personal relationships with students in the CTC, and initiating social events for community connections.

Advocating for a point of view

We advocate the interest of commuters and transfers in this place. We are representing a group of minority on campus who definitely need more attention and guidance for campus resources.

Listening

We build our team upon respect and communication: we assume positive intent, and everyone has a say on important issues that we all vote to decide. In CTC, I am trained to be an active listener, listen to our regulars stories and different voices and opinions.

I work as a Commuter and Transfer Associate (CTA) in Commuter and Transfer Common (CTC), at Husky Union Building 141. I am in charge of event programming, marketing, and graphic design, serving over one thousand commuters and transfer students, connecting them to various resources from different departments of UW, and hosting monthly events to create a community for them.

For instance, with my coworkers in CTC, we have planned events such as Waffle Day on March 8th, to connect with over one hundred commuters on campus. We also held the library fair in February of 2018, to mix and mingle with over fifty new transfers who are eager to know more about campus resources.

Competency

Personal Contribution

Our CTA team consists of seven team members and one manager. We are a diverse team and we all contribute our personal strengths. Dustine is the head of social media marketing, Tremaine designs a monthly magazine called “CTC Zine”, Emma and Leah cooperate to reach out and plan events. I value the diversity in the workplace, because this is the source of creativity, and we appreciate all our various outputs.

Diversity

Commuter and Transfer Commons value diversity and inclusion. When working at the front desk, I gained energy when talking to peers, professionals, and my colleagues in CTC, and helping out with administrative tasks. My CTC team members have diverse major, specialties, and family background, but we all work towards the same goal -- to provide the best service that we can for commuters and transfers. Representing different populations on campus, we each bring in distinctive cultural perspectives during our staff meetings, and it is the variety of ideas that help perfect the decision making process.

Self-Development

I have developed my organizational skills for my job as a CTA. I enjoy brainstorming themes of events like a self-starter, embracing innovative and practical ideas, and eventually putting them into practice with my event committee. In addition, now I am good at working with poster design, marketing on social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and "Wechat" (Facebook-like application in China). I believe that my overall experience and skill sets would develop myself into a good fit for my future career.
